This would be the fourth single to be taken from their hugely successful debut Definitely Maybe. Oasis weren't as humble as some bands when fame and fortune greeted them, defiantly claiming themselves to be the best band on the planet. Cigarettes & Alcohol can be seen as a depiction of the lifestyle surrounding the group as they tried to front the Rock'n'Roll cliche head on, trashing hotel rooms and taking copious amounts of drugs in the process.
What is worth remembering though is that when Noel wrote this song while living in an impoverished area of Manchester, Cigarettes and Alcohol were two incredibly popular ways for the masses to escape the monotony of the working class council estate. Oasis illustrated the mentality of many disillusioned jobseekers emerging from the recession of the early nineties. As we come out of another recession it is clear that the song has stood the test of time, many connected then with its addictive chorus and continue to do so.
The single was their second from the record to reach the top ten, hitting the number seven spot and staying in the charts for thirty five weeks. The main riff glances, or even glares towards Get It On by T-Rex but the lyrics and the subversive lifestyle they seemed to promote can only be attributed to Oasis
