Oasis week on Qthemusic.com - Live Forever
Live Forever was the third single to be released from debut album Definitely Maybe, and also marked the band's first foray into the top ten. Supersonic and Shakermaker, two previous singles, had placed Oasis in the public eye but it would take this uplifting anthem to set the wheels in motion, beginning their major success.
Noel wrote the song in 1991 while working on a building site in Manchester, when he wasn't in a band. Liam was fronting his own group at the time, which Noel later joined and appropriated as a vehicle for his already amassed material. Once this happened Oasis became a serious outfit, rehearsing daily and performing tirelessly. It was during the now infamous gig in Glasgow at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut that their effort paid off. Head of Creation Records, Alan McGee then visiting Glasgow, saw them perform live whilst filling a gap between trains back to London and was blown away. He signed the group just four days later. At the time he didn't even conceive of the worldwide success that would follow reckoning that they could maybe sell a million units worldwide if he was lucky.
Live Forever had long been a bedrock of the live set and was an obvious single choice to build momentum before the album launch. Definitely Maybe would later become the fastest selling debut album in the UK upon it's release and the bombastic declaration of the band's arrival on the UK music scene is still regarded by many to be the finest album delivered by the group.
Q Exclusive - Noel on Live Forever
This track marked the start of an upward trajectory that would see Oasis sell an estimated seventy million records worldwide, having eight UK number one singles and seven UK number one albums in the process. Its optimistic tone reflected the mood as Brit-Pop (before it had a name) emerged and thousands found a new identity within it. Sunglasses would be worn out of context in an indoor setting, tracksuits were fashionable and on the streets a new self-assured swagger would be adopted by the masses.
Behind the tinted shades both Gallagher brothers wore, were tensions, and sometimes black eyes. On a future attempt to crack America the two would come to blows leading to a temporary break-up. This would be the first temporary squabble to mar an excellent fifteen year career.
Time Flies... 1994-2009 is an excellent epitaph as the life of Oasis draws to a close (or at least for as long as anyone can predict), reminding listeners of just how important the group were to the nineties musical landscape. For a band whom many believe lost their relevance after their second album, this singles collection adds weight to the opposite argument, with iconic hits from beginning to end.
