Oasis week on Qthemusic.com - Day 3: - Stop Crying Your Heart Out

This epic slow song was the second single to be taken from their fifth album Heathen Chemistry. The record was the first one made with the two new performers in the band. Andy Bell joined as the group's new bassist and Zak Starkey, Ringo Star's son, became a non-permanent drummer. Other members contributed heavily to the writing process here, most notably with Songbird, which became the first single released to have been written by Liam.

Stop Crying Your Heart Out was penned by Noel and is reminiscent of his previous successes with ballads including Don't Look Back In Anger, Stand By Me and Sunday Morning Call. Despite efforts to add an injection of pace, the song was just too good as it was. The track proved to be hugely popular, peaking at number two.

Stop Crying Your Heart Out was not only used during England's exit from the 2002 World Cup in Japan and Korea, but also after unsuccessful games during the 2006 Ashes cricket series against Australia. Although it evokes depressing memories of 'fairies' crying over sporting losses, this is a highpoint on a well received record, marking a return to form after Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants met mixed responses. The next album, Don't Believe The Truth, would continue to turn around the two album image many observers had of this band.

The group seemed more focussed and more mature after the crest of the Be Here Now wave had collapsed. Heathen Chemistry was a less lavish record which proved to adhere to a similar straight forward structure to debut Definitely Maybe.

With the 2010 World Cup about to get underway, and no official song being made this year, hopefully this won't become a Del Amitri style way of remembering England's efforts. Cue a montage of mistakes and penalty misses. Just don't come home too soon England
