Oasis Week: - Wonderwall

Oasis week on Qthemusic.com - Day 3

Wonderwall famously never reached the number one spot for Oasis, peaking at number two despite being one of their most iconic hits. Many people have covered the song, ensuring its lasting popularity. You might remember the comically crooned version by The Mike Flower Pops that reached the same spot as the original later in the same year.

Jay-Z even had a crack at playing it in front of thousands during his entrance at Glastonbury 2008. After much controversy and concern, some of which was voiced by Noel Gallagher himself, Jay-Z ironically covered the track providing the festival with another unforgettable moment.

This song is a right of passage for many budding guitar players as they begin to learn chords, consisting of only four repeated. Music stores owe a lot to this track, there would never be as many Capo's sold if it were not for the use of one here. Watch below to hear Noel reminiscing about writing his first tune using one.

We will never know if Digsy followed through on his promise. The single did go platinum, but never made it to the top spot. Wonderwall encapsulates the simplicity of Noel's songwriting, but it was this accessibility that made it such an alternative anthem, sung by crowds around the world, from gigs to football stadiums including the beloved Maine Road.

The acoustic dovetail perfectly with Liam's rasping vocals, and this song in no small part ensured (What's The Story) Morning Glory became the biggest selling album in the group's history, charting at number one and staying there for ten weeks. The second single from the same album, Roll With It provided the ammunition for the pinnacle of an intense showdown with Blur. Country House was released on the same week, creating a stand off between the two bands which Blur won in sales. Wonderwall is however the more notable Brit-Pop nostalgia record.
