Los - The Cow

Comments

Xfm's John Kennedy coined them as 'Black Keys fronted by a blonde beauty', BBC6 likened them to Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and a small myriad of various outlets have them down as everything bluesy to, uhm, Gwen Stefani.

However, the schizophrenic name-dropping that often accompany unsigned London trio Los is certainly excused. After all, they're influenced by such diverse acts as Nina Simone, Karate and ...Trail Of Dead, all the while keeping a thorough lo-fi approach to their unique hybrid of blues, grunge and rock.

The Cow is their latest, self-produced, self-released single (their fourth), and from its one-note guitar intro through a chorus where vocalist Helen Sargent hollers something about wanting to try, try try (we're not really sure what), Los prove that their digi-what?-no-gimmick-gimmick is nothing short of astounding.

Witness here: Two minutes in, and a seemingly impromptu cacophony of Chris Hamilton's guitar noise and Dan Hale's brick drumming makes way for a breakdown we expect will go all King Crimson on us. But there's no room for 7-minute guitar doodling in DIY-land, so 40 intense seconds and a false stop later it suddenly concludes. Short, perhaps, but oh so effective.

  • Very unfortunate name. Did a search on Amazon and got over 14,000 results. If there is something there, I'll never know. I'm not trawling through 14,000 results to find out!
