Just like his latest music video, John Grant's career is no straightforward superhero plot. There's been twists and turns and dark moments as the former driving force behind The Czars is the first to recognise, battling his own personal demons throughout it all. Whilst The Czars garnered critical appreciation, wider recognition always seemed to evade them, leading some to describe them as a "musician's band".
Queen Of Denmark, the first record under his own name seems to be making up for some of the under-appreciation, ably backed by his friends and Bella Union label-mates Midlake it is a '70s steeped study on growing up, failed relationships and feeling like you don't fit in (In Grant's case growing up gay in a religious household, and surrounded by silver spoon high school jocks he couldn't relate to). It's been garnering glowing reviews, including in Q Magazine.
The video for Chicken Bones sees Grant as a lovelorn superhero, doing your less than normal superhero things like going to a car boot sale (in his work spandex) and enjoying a burger whilst adding to his collection of Transformers toys. Then the surreal caper proper begins - tackling baddies. The climax to it all is a showdown scene soundtracked by the fuzzed funk bass of Chicken Bones that involves Grant disrupting his (likely) arch-nemesis having a romantic dinner with his girl. Cue a bizarre fight scene... (Who'd have thought a cafetiere could be as useful as kryptonite at quelling enemies?). You really have to see it yourself...
