Phantom may be familiar to track of the day readers with a good memory - we featured their single Great Pretender last year. The video for that was a dark car journey through East London with singer Elsie Martins, her coming off like a PJ Harvey-esque chanteuse, causing our reviewer to compare it to the unusual but visually appropriate "black cat sneaking across silk sheets".
Those who enjoyed that sound and atmosphere will be relieved to hear they have not abandoned it on the debut album. Voodoo Romantic is the lead single (free download) ahead of the release of Smoke & Mirrors. Starting out in sparse chiming guitars territory, Elsie's vocal and organ backing kicks in turning the foreboding up another couple of notches. The songs highlight is a middle eight that allows Elsie to repeat the question-raising phrase "You modern boys are so so old" before the subtle industrial machinations and drums kick in again for a climactic end and the slow decay of the track.

Bad choice of album title as there is already an album of that name by the terrific Eden House.
In fact its also been used as a title by rapper OC and Lifehouse. Hope that Phantom are more original than their choice of album titles.
