Originally formed in Glasgow in 1987, Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee split The Vaselines in 1989 on the week of the release of their debut and thus far only studio album, Dum Dum.
In the intervening years a young buck from the Mid-west by the name of Kurt Cobain became a fan and as Nirvana's star ascended so did their cult following, in part due to Nirvana's covering of three of their songs and Kurt's citing of them as his favourite songwriters. Meantime Eugene and Frances embark on different musical projects, touring and collaborating intermittently. And that was that, or so it seemed...
A well received live re-union in 2008 at a Glasgow charity fundraiser and successful subsequent U.S. shows celebrating the 20th anniversary of their record label Sub Pop prompts other ideas and now the band are back with a new album that is every bit a Vaselines' record. [That's the text version - watch the The Vaselines' own entertaining video history of the band at the foot of the page].
So, what artist and music do these indie legends listen to? Well here you go - The Vaselines have picked their essential tracks for you, with comments added by both Eugene and Frances.

Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood - Some Velvet Morning
This is where it all began for The Vaselines. We're still trying to write a song as good as this.
lcd Soundsystem - Someone Great
Beautiful tune,amazing sound.
Hans Zimmer - Discomboulate (Sherlock Holmes original motion picture soundtrack).
This does everything that a two minute pop song should do only this is a full orchestra.
Ian And Sylvia - You Were On My Mind
This could be The Vaselines in the 1960's. I swear we only heard this recently.
Laurie Anderson - Bright Red
She is a genius. I was hard pushed to know which one to choose, but Bright Red is my favourite Laurie record.
Dory Previn - Lady With The Braid
This is so sad!!! if i was the guy in this song i would be looking for a sharp exit.
Conor Oberst And The Mystic Valley Band - Ten Women
Nice and simple.
U.n.p.o.c. - Here On My Own
I first heard of UNPOC through Julie Mclarnon who engineered on the latest Vaselines record. I couldn't understand why i had never hear this amazing liberating cd before. every track on the record is great so it was hard to choose.
Edwyn Collins - Leviathan
It just so happens that my favourite book by one of my favourite authors is called Leviathan as well.
Dillard And Clark - Why Not Your Baby?
Bliss for three minute and forty two seconds. Put this on,have a cup of tea and bathe in it's beauty. This track will always lift me up when clouds appear.

Kurt Cobain was from Olympia Washington, that's in the North West...not the Mid West
