Gold Panda - Snow & Taxis

Ever since Burial's self-titled second LP was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Award, bedroom producers who were once looked over have been gaining the recognition they deserve. London based, Gold Panda, offers a soundscape that far outreaches the urban grit many of his fellow city dwellers have placed at the center of their creativity. Lucky Shiner is a tech-house influenced, but most importantly oriental inspired debut.
The man behind this much blogged about underground success shares Burial's meek traits when concerning media interest. Known only as Derwin, he prefers to let the music talk for itself. So what does it say about him? Derwin moved to Japan to teach English as a foreign language, this is where his samples began to speak volumes. His heavy immersion into the colourful essence of Japanese culture gives flavour to Same Dream China, with its Bamboo percussions. Album opener You is a fantastically ambient number, choosing a vocal from far flung shores as its focal point. Today's track Snow & Taxi's continues the atmosphere with soft introductory synths and an uplifting xylophonic sparkle throughout.
Fans of Noah Lennox's Panda Bear, Pantha Du Prince, or even LCD Soundsystem may find themselves lost inside this mystical production. In the past he's remixed for Little Boots, Bloc Party, and Simian Mobile Disco. Despite modestly feeling uncomfortable performing in front of crowds, the one-man Animal Collective has a sizeable list of dates coming up.
