Matt Costa - Drive
We start the week by giving you an exclusive taste of Matt Costa's third album which is released today. Drive is taken from his much anticipate third record Mobile Chateau and is performed only for Q below. Drive is a fantastic track influenced by The Beach Boys sunshine pop as well as holding a hint of Richard Ashcroft within it.
Mobile Chateau was initially recorded in Brushfire Studios in LA mid 2009, dropping No Doubt's Tom Dumont on the production in favour of going it alone. He also recruited a completely new band to rejuvenate the way he works and to give himself the opportunity to grow with new musicians. Now a South California collective called The Mother Sons, comprising of Robb Rowe (guitar/bass), Kenny Bender (guitar/bass), Danny Garcia (guitar/bass), and Jona Wilder (drums), add their stamp.
After initial sessions Costa then moved to Santa Ana, California at Pheasant Studios. Here he further found his feet as a producer and an engineer. "I wanted to take a much more raw approach to the recording," Costa explains. "I wanted to add a haziness to the songs, so you couldn't tell if it was recorded in a giant church or a tin can. This leaves room for the listener to imagine them however they want." The new record is testament to Costa's creativity. You may think you know his sound but this is a stirring reminder that he is always changing.
