Solomon Burke dies aged 70

Comments

The American soul singer Solomon Burke has died, aged 70. Burke, was on a flight from Los Angeles to Amsterdam's Schipol airport on Sunday October 10 when he took ill.

A statement from his family on Solomon's offical website reads "Early this morning, Sunday, October 10, 2010, the legendary King of Rock & Soul, Solomon Burke, our father, passed away due to natural causes.

Solomon had just arrived at Schipol Airport in Amsterdam, the Netherlands for a sold out show at Paradiso with Dutch band, De Dijk. He was on his way to spread his message of love as he loved to do."

As indicated by the statement, Solomon was still an active performer and had been travelling to Holland to appear with Dutch band De Dijk on Tuesday night following a recent collaboration with them.

The former preacher turned "King of Rock and Soul" was born in Philadelphia in 1940. Initially inspired by gospel music he then began to perform more secular songs, becoming best known for Eveybody Needs Somebody, the soul standard he composed and recorded in 1964 with producers Jerry Wexler and Bert Berns, shortly thereafter covered by the Rolling Stones further increasing his reputation. It was also used in the 1980 film Blues Brothers.

Credited with creating his own style when rock'n'roll and R&B were yet to become established forms he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame in 2001 and a resurgence of interest in him followed along with a new album in 2002. Thereafter he continued recording, collaborating and performing up until his passing.

He leaves behind 21 children, 90 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
