Cloud Nothings - Hey Cool Kid
Cleveland's Cloud Nothings originally began as a lo-fi indie bedroom computer project with it's sole member being the then 18-year-old Dylan Baldi. What set these raw, distorted songs apart however was their ability to uphold pop sensibilities and grip listeners with a heavily reliance on a catchy hook.
Cloud Nothing's subtle, under the radar American releases have become hard to find gems, with fans scouring the internet to get their fix. Now luckily for them Hey Cool Kids marks the UK debut, having recently signed to Wichita. The single will be released on 18 October, with Turning On, a collection of those previous rarities being made available from the 25th of the same month. A full length of new material is also being recorded at the moment in Baltimore, with producer Chester Gwazda, who has previously worked with Dan Deacon.
Hey Cool Kids has a hard edged muffled production method, with a vocal rasp reminiscent of Julan Casablancas' distinctive gravely tone on Is This It. It's not just the music which is lo-fi, so are his robot making skills. Here in the official video Baldi makes a Frankenstein creation, with the sinister motive being to win lots of basketball trophies and to prove that white middle aged balding guys can shoot hoops with the best of them. Unfortunately there's a recession on so gaffer tape and lab goggles will have to do, nonetheless, as with the music, the results are astounding.
