Eels - Baby Loves Me
Mark Oliver Everett, simply known monosyllabically as E to his fans, is the driving force behind Eels. E, may have chosen a simple initial to define himself but he certainly is a man of letters, with an album trilogy written, recorded and released in the last 14 months, the culmination of which is his newest upbeat electro touched offering Tomorrow Morning.
Baby Loves Me marks a new uplifting songwriting perspective for Everett, a man who has previously articulated anguish so expertly having known tragedy so well. After his father's death of a heart attack during his difficult teenage years, the guitar became a therapeutic instrument to help deal with such a huge loss. In one sense pain has always been a catalyst to his career. While creating his incredible second album, Electro-Shock Blues, his mother was diagnosed with cancer and his sister committed suicide. Although the record was an understandably bleak affair it is regarded as being one of his best.
Tomorrow Morning is an optimistic ending to a trilogy which began with Hombre Lobo. I'm A Hummingbird sees E reflecting on the past and confirming, 'it was all worth it to be here now,' as he sings. The Morning is a positive affirmation of what is to come of a new day with lots of possibility as 'yesterday is just a dream.'
The video for Baby Loves Me visually carries the comedic feel of its lyrics. E transforms London into a toy village, his inspiration for which is a response to the ups and downs he regularly feels. "Sometimes I'm big, sometimes I'm small, and sometimes I'm really, really tiny. Kind of like how I feel from day to day. And I see a lot of the world in this video, much like I do on our world tour right now. It's my way of saying 'thanks for making me feel bad by accusing me of being a terrorist in Hyde Park this June. I'll show you. I'll make your city look like a toy'," he explains.
Words: Simon Butcher
Just an hour after E was treated like a suspected terrorist, we interviewed him. Check out the five part interview with E himself here
