thegoteam500x245The Go! Team - T.O.R.N.A.D.O.

This effervescent project burst onto the scene in 2004 with Thunder, Lightening, Strike marking a statement of intent. While scientists are smashing atoms together in a large hadron collider The Go! Team are doing the same thing with musical genres. Fusing everything from northern soul, funk, hip hop, electro and garage, they certainly caused a big bang upon discovery and got nominated for the Mercury Prize in the process.

Beginning as a lo-fi project with producer Ian Parton at the controls in early 2000, the team spiralled into a diverse ensemble as touring demands unexpectedly mounted. Once on the road their expansive yet distorted debut took on another life, filling festivals with freestyle rapping, the echoed crashing of two drum kits, and exuberance coming from six performers onstage adapting the heavily sampling work. Touring proved to be just as expansive with an extensive two years worth of dates taking them from Sydney to Seoul.

The follow-up Proof Of Youth continued to mash together instruments and layers unexpectedly, creating something wholly original. The bedroom feel was taken away in favour of better quality amps and mics, capturing the live explosion much more faithfully.

After a three year break Rolling Blackouts is to mark the return of Parton's colourful creation, due out on January 31. Preceding single T.O.R.N.A.D.O couldn't spell things out more clearly. Beginning with a choppy drum'n'brass eruption panning from left to right, a whirlwind of enthusiasm is bound to gather before the full release.

Rolling Blackouts does not rely on samples in the same way as its predecessors with a preference for guest appearances. T.O.R.N.A.D.O. is Ninja led but elsewhere Bethany Best Coast and Piano Magic's Angèle David-Guillou feature on the album's title track, also contributions come from Satomi Matsuzaki from Deerhoof, Dominique Young Unique, the hotly tipped Tampa based rapper and Bordeaux's bedroom balladeer, Lispector.
