It's quite incredible how after over 10 years of being on the scene, Wiley still manages to surprise and amaze. With his record deal in a sort of bizarre limbo, the UK undergrounds most enigmatic artist continues to make excellent music off his own back. His latest track, From the Drop (produced and released by 2000 Mercury Prize Nominee MJ Cole) is a minimalist yet gutsy and powerful track, showcasing Wiley's ability to create gold on any track.
From humble beginnings at pirate radio stations, Wiley has put an incredible amount of work into his career, personally pressing and distributing his first releases, but also bringing many, many artists through with him. MJ Cole also shines brightly here, his instrumental complimenting Wiley's style superbly.
A large departure from 2008's chart success Wearing My Rolex, From The Drop incorporates pitch black percussion and Wiley's ever increasingly clever lines, acerbically referencing his leaking of eleven zip files (over two hundred songs) worth of unreleased music earlier in the year. Hopefully when his new album, tentatively titled The Elusive 2, is released, it will be full to the brim with similar tunes by the Godfather of Grime.
Single From The Drop was released on November 1st through Prolific Records.
Album The Elusive 2 is expected early next year on All Around The World.
