1. THE SUBURBS
Arcade Fire
Label: Mercury
Key track: Month Of May
After tackling epic hymns (Funeral) and apocalyptic doom (Neon Bible), the Montreal septet pared down their sound and stretched their range, echoing early-'70s Bowie in The Suburbs' gorgeous, loping title track and The Cars in the FM radio shapes of Modern Man. Simultaneously reflective and rebellious, it was hard to tell whether Win Butler was pining for the days of his Texan upbringing or simply recalling his burning desire for escape. Amid this mess of emotions, The Suburbs - at 16 tracks, a proper double album in the "old money" - was the sound of the most commercial art-rock band on the planet thrillingly hitting their peak.

Not sure how you can only pick 'Month of May' as the key track on this album... Every song on it's a key track! Listen to it the whole way through and the genius just pours out of each track, flowing effortlessly from start to finish. Album of the Century so far?
