Top 10: Drummers

TOP TEN DRUMMERS
In Q295, Q Magazine counted down their favourite sticksmen and woman. Here they are in all their finery, and not a drummer joke in sight! But do you agree with the selection? Feel free to tell us in the comments below.

10. RENI
He got the funk

Laid-back, enigmatic and seldom seen without his signature hat, The Stone Roses' Reni could play anything, from '60s garage pop to wig-out psyche rock - producer John Leckie even noting that the sampled funk loop on Fools Gold didn't sound right until Reni played along to it.

9. Matt Helders
P diddy's sticksman of choice

He may have stated that he took up the drums because it was the only instrument left unclaimed in the Arctic Monkeys, but Helders's untutored energy and rasping snare rolls remain as integral to the band's appeal as Alex Turner's angular riffs. Indeed, his skills are now more widely appreciated than ever, with rap mogul P Diddy recently inviting the "funky and soulful" Helders to join up with his Dirty Money crew.

8.?uestlove
The roots' soul brother #1

For years hip hop drew on two sources for its beats - the metronomic thump of Roland's famous 808 drum machine and samples from '70s funk. Ahmir Thompson, however, the spectacularly Afro-ed power behind Philadelphia rap collective The Roots, combines both, emulating the machine-like crunch of early Def Jam and James Brown's militantly funky drummers. Little wonder he's in such demand among his peers, most recently beefing up the backbeats for soul crooner John Legend.

7. Moe Tucker
She does it standing up
Rock drummers tend to be viewed as a macho breed, yet during her time in The Velvet Underground, Moe Tucker was the polar opposite, with a cool, detached drumming style as uniquely unconventional as her blank, androgynous appearance. Not only did she play standing up, she used mallets rather than sticks on her four-piece kit - a pared-down approach that later inspired Bobby Gillespie-era Jesus And Mary Chain and, naturally, Meg White.

6. John Bonham
Led Zeppelin's titanic tub-thumper

The undisputed king of '70s rock, John "Bonzo" Bonham hit as hard as he partied, famously using the heaviest drumsticks available - which he nicknamed "trees" - to pound out intense 15-minute drum solos. His premature death marked the end of Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant remarking that Bonham's was "an impossible role to fill", only to be resurrected via early hip hop (the Beastie Boys sampled his thunderous drum break from When The Levee Breaks) and Spinal Tap's self-destructing drummer gags.

5. Joey Jordison
Slipknot's masked marauder

Recently voted the best drummer of the past 25 years by Rhythm magazine - an award he described as "beyond unbelieveable" - the Slipknot man has skills even more terrifying than his stage mask. A master of blurred, double kick-drum riffage, he's since taken the drum solo to previously untested angles, performing on a rotating drum riser which tips forward 90 degrees while illuminated by a glowing pentangle. Not even Tommy Lee attempted that.

4. Sly Dunbar
Reggae's rhythm king

Alongside bassist Robbie Shakespeare, Lowell "Sly" Dunbar reinvented Jamaican reggae, his relaxed tempos and dub-inspired double rimshots anchoring great '70s roots albums by Peter Tosh and The Mighty Diamonds. No doubt aware he was irreplaceable, Dunbar wasn't troubled by the arrival of the drum machine, effortlessly blending synth-pop, disco and dancehall on Grace Jones's run of classic early-'80s albums - though even he couldn't repeat the feat for Mick Jagger's She's The Boss.

3. Neil Peart
Rush's professor of paradiddle

A drummer joke: What's the last thing a band wants their drummer to say? "Want to try one of my songs?" Unless it's Neil Peart, of course, the rhythmic brain behind Canadian "power trio" Rush, and the group's primary lyricist and songwriter. Equally renowned for his roiling tom-tom breaks and improbably gigantic kits - for a time he boasted back-to-back electronic and acoustic rigs - Peart also introduced future generations of math-rock nerds to the mysteries of 5/4 time signatures and the paradiddle-diddle.

2. Stewart Copeland
Gobby yank. Sting's nemesis. Drum guru

He may have looked like an off-duty tennis coach, but it was Copeland's blend of rock power, reggae-inspired timing and jazz finesse which propelled The Police from the London punk circuit to global ubiquity. And while the headbands were in dubious taste, there was no questioning his technique and infectious enthusiasm, whether travelling Africa as "The Rhythmatist" or flicking his drumsticks against the engines of a Saturn V rocket in the video for 1979 chart-topper Walking On The Moon.

1. Keith Moon
Not called "moon the loon" for nothing...

The most famous drummer in rock - with good reason. Prior to Moon, drummers mostly sat at the back of the stage keeping time, a convention he upended with a combination of wild showmanship, rampant hedonism and the kind of unstoppable backbeat which powered The Who's My Generation. Tragically, his alcohol intake was as prodigious as his talent and he died aged just 32. But the legend lives on, thanks to incidents such as the time he detonated a firework inside his bass drum live on US TV.

And the worst drummer...

Tommy Lee
MÖtley Crüe muppet

More notorious for his offstage antics, Mötley Crüe's Tommy Lee masked his obvious limitations with charisma, mayhem and ludicrous drum solos performed upside down inside a hydraulic cage. At least he can now laugh at himself - a recent internet clip shows him "playing" the breasts of a troupe of bikini models.

Disagree? Have we missed anyone? Tell us below...

Tony Williams (Miles Davis's Drummer in the early 60's)
Billy Cobham (Mahavishnu Orchestra amonst others)

    and what about Ginger Baker!

For the current crop of drummers Nathan Followill to me is the best around at the moment.

  • The only ones I agree with are Stewart Copeland and John Bonham. Even then John Bonham did what he did very well but he wasn't what you'd call subtle. And Keith Moon playing sounded like a drum kit being thrown down a flight of stairs! I'm amazed John Entwistle didn't shoot him he must have been a bass players nightmare.

    3) If Matt Helders gets a chance on here Dominic Howard should. 4) most importantly, there are hundreds of guys who are actually better than everyone here except they havent played in a huge band yet

  • This is mostly a list for non-musicians. There are so many drummers that could run circles around most on this list. Problem is, only musicians would recognize their names and not sell your mag...right?

Moe Tucker: "a pared-down approach that later inspired Bobby Gillespie-era Jesus And Mary Chain and, naturally, Meg White."

WHY "naturally" Meg White? Meg is not a "real" drummer and "naturally" simply because she's female? This is not 1950 here! Your mag is in a position to help end the stereotypes. Stop the sexist assumptions.

One last thing. Questlove is quirky and has value as someone the general public likes, but as a drummer he is over-rated due to his high visibility perch on Jimmy Fallon. He's cool, but not one of the greatest drummer by far.

I'd add Terry 'Ted' Bozio (for actually being the closest thing to Animal from the Muppets and for playing in his underpants) and Carmine Appice (for also being that rare thing a great backing vocalist; 'Superstition' Beck, Bogart and Appice, and 'You keep me hanging on' Vanilla Fudge.

conspicuous by his absence is micky hart, but i guess people tend to think of him more as a percussionist than a drummer...

but then again, you could say that about copeland too.

in all candor, i am not familiar with the other drummers, but i'd give honorable mentions to levon helm and don henley, not for drumming. levon's talent is his unmistakable voice, and don is an excellent songwriter.

He was a jazz drummer who could do blues, rock, funk, R&B or anything. Just listen to him for ten minutes. Plus he could still out drum anyone a third of his age today. He traveled all over Africa and learned every different style. He has no peer!!

  • yep, i overlooked ginger baker. and animal. good calls.

krupa and buddy rich are jazz and big band drummers. great, but not known for rock and roll. although buddy's band did do a great horn version of Norwegian Wood.

kreutzman, charlie watts and ringo ...

competent men, but more artisans than artists. ringo and charlie are noteworthy for the band they are from, not so much their actual skill. and bill k. pales in comparison to micky hart .

charlie watts... gotta give him extra points for cool. watching him and wyman roll their eyes at mick struttin' like a chicken in the video for "Start Me Up" priceless

worst drummer is NOT micky dolenz, ironically, it's gotta be pete best.

moonie as number one... makes up for a lot of other errors and omissions. there has never been another drummer with his energy and showmanship, and few who could rival him in talent. not just a drummer, not just a rock drummer, but an honest to God ROCK STAR!

Along with Klaus Dinger of Neu!, Liebezeit inspired a generation of musicians to free themselves from rock's straight-jacket.

There's not much video of him playing (which is possibly why he's not in the list), but watch Paper House on YouTube as he kicks off at about 3.30; or listen to his breathtaking beats on Splash.

I definitely agree with Moonie as number one. He could be both powerful and graceful when he needed to be. But where's Charlie Watts ?? Watts has a groove that few drummers can match...most likely due to his love of jazz fills. Just listen to "Rough Justice" off the Stones' 'A Bigger Bang'. The guy is tremendous.

Those guys are the likes of Keith Moon, Neil Peart, John Bonham, etc... The drummer of Jesus and Mary Chain, Joy Division, Dave Grohl, dude from Porcupine Tree, dude from the Killers, Phil Collins, Meg White, etc... Are you fucking serious??? You guys are retarded and shouldn't get a vote!!!! If you're a drummer ask yourself, would I have written the drum patterns for "Fool in the Rain", "Tom Sawyer" or most any Who song? Not likely!! Much less play them. I you answered no thjen you should probably accept that you're really not very good, never will be and your parents were right about you.

  • Unforgettable Keith... still number one in our hearts and... NOT ONLY! The Who would have not been THAT extraordinary band that they were and still are without his touching "beats"! Thanx keith! Still alive and kicking in my dearest thoughts... in Pete's and Roger's works...

  • ...so what you're saying is that readers of Q magazine don't listen to Don Caballero? Damon Che for the win!

    Also, Elvin Jones.

You can remove both Helders and Jordison from the above list. Both decent enough at what they do, but also generic.

  • i know this is late but....WHOA!!!! this list is biased to basically one genre. i know you got a hiphop drum legend in there and one OK reggae drummer... there are a ton of other drummers in other genres that you dont have listed. its hard to get them all on one top 10 list but still you missed a ton of pple....

  • This is a shitfaceted list. Joey Jordison is a better drummer than Bonham and Questlove? Joey Jordison is not even the best metal drummer, FYI.

  • Portnoy is the greatest drummer of all time second to nobody. Out of this list neil peart is tops no doubt, rest are still greats though for sure . Sweet list!!

  • Ummmm.....this is a dumb list because you forgot to mention James Sullivan (Avenged Sevenfold), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theatre), Travis Barker (Blink182), and Moose (Bullet For My Valentine). You obviously don't know what real drumming is...especially since Neil Peart is up that high. He may have been the best back in the day, but he is nothing compared to todays drummers.

  • Rein should have been higher! Suppose depends if you like the music as to who you rate as a drummer - Jimmy Chamberlain is far superior to Dave Grohl though !!
