New To Q Sessions - Funeral Party, Kid Adrift and Liz Lawrence
The New To Q Sessions began on Monday night at the beautiful Bush Hall venue in Shepherd's Bush, London. Funeral Party were the first headliners in a week of gigs that will also see Noah and the Whale, Clare Maguire, Egyptian Hip Hop, and The Pierces perform at these exciting intimate shows.
Things began with the charming and smiley Liz Lawrence warming up the crowd. Taking to the stage with her acoustic guitar and a band adding depth to her sound. At times her vocal prowess and well thought out lyrics hinted towards the twice Mercury nominated Laura Marling. Having played across the UK, her performance was self assured and she captivated the audience with aplomb.
Next up Kid Adrift attacked ear-drums with a reverberating bass romp getting everyone's attention from the off. Some were checking they were not stood directly underneath the glamorous chandeliers which decorated the roof of the venue for fear they might fall down. An exhilarating set merged electronic elements with metal influences, creating a Muse inspired experimental sound. Lot's of energetic head-banging ensued as the barrage of high frequency vocals and smashing guitars was absorbed by the appreciative audience.
After a brief interlude Q's Senior Editor Matt Mason introduced "one of the most exciting acts in rock music today," Funeral Party. The LA upstarts delved into a tight sounding set with precision and attitude. Frontman Chad Elliot boldly strode the stage, using the bass drum as a platform, beckoning the audience to follow him by accentuating every beat with an expressive, energetic move. On the night of their debut album, Golden Age Of Nowhere, coming out in the UK, the band were on fiery form.
It is the best known single New York City Loves To Dance Around To The Sound Of LA which closes the set with it's use of sensitive possibly James Murphy/LCD Soundsystem inspired cowbells causing a frenzy of appreciation. Guitarists swoon and the drum kit is once again used as a climbing frame as the final song nears its finale.
