Alex Winston - Locomotive

Comments

You may already be familiar with Detroit born Alex Winston. In the last six months she has played a sold-out gig at The Social in London, performed a New To Q Sessions gig and released the mini album (or massive EP depending what way you look at it), Sister Wife on which Locomotive is the opener.

From it's fluctuating first vocal "I wish I cared about the things you cared about but I don't" it's clear we're in Kate Bush inspired territory. The line also acts as one of the song's most potent hooks and is so dangerously catchy it might soon become tired if there wasn't more to the picture.

Overall though, the effect is not one of just heavy influence. Forthright drums, multiple acoustic guitars and a long but repeating almost-electro bass notices combine to propel the songs forward and play up it's dance credentials, making it something fans of Ellie Goulding and Florence and the Machine might be happy to add to their mp3 players.

As an introduction to her it's a good and no doubt catchy radio-friendly number, though the rest of Sister Wife contains a slightly more mixed variety hinting at future possibilities.
