Sparkadia - Mary

Sparkadia160x120It's a funny thing, being a songwriter. You write some tunes, get a band together, do a little touring, get a record deal, make an album and then, one by one your fellow band members leave to pursue other interest until you're the only one left. At least, that's what happened to Alex Burnett's Sparkadia.

Once a bona fide quartet from Sydney, Australia, Sparkadia released their debut album in 2008 before slowly disintegrating, leaving Burnett as sole member. Now settled in London, Burnett has teamed up with Mark Tieku (Florence And The Machine, Rogues, Claire Maguire ++) for his second album The Great Impression, out next month.

So, Mary - his latest single - somehow manages to start out as a perfect coupling of Scissor Sisters' track of the same name and Arcade Fire's We Used To Wait, before quickly escalating into a gargantuan wrestling match between White Lies' neo-dystopia and Ed Harcourt's eccentricity. Like Kasabian in a love triangle with Rufus Wainwright and Florence, it's a fairly absurd scenario, albeit one friendly enough for Radio 1, and certainly a leap in a more anthemic direction from last year's Bowie-indebted single Talking Like I'm Falling Down Stairs. Brilliant.
