Jamie Hince and Alison Mosshart are ready to return with their fourth album, Blood Pressures, on April 4th. The new record is a departure from the sparse, angular sound of 2008's Midnight Boom. Heavier instrumentation is favoured, with layered, art rock melodies taking priority.
The Kills duo delved into programming and sampling when creating this dark guitar-led album of attitude. Hince painstakingly collected drum sounds from those available in school band halls in the US and those at hand in Key Club Studios. "I really like the techno feel," he explains. "I really like all my emotions to come out in the guitar playing and it's even better against a really rigid backbeat where there's no speeding up or slowing down."
This technological, yet elemental direction can clearly be heard on Satelite, the upcoming single. Guitar parts are heavily treated to create such a heavy fuzzing riff. "I used seven amps in different rooms, all with different frequencies, trying to get that brutal sound," he says.
Alison's time touring with The Dead Weather has shaped the direction of Blood Pressures too. "I wasn't used to not knowing what was going to happen next on stage, having been so familiar performing with a drum machine. So I think I got better at using my voice as an instrument to make sounds and noise that could compete with guitars and feedback, rather than just delivering lyrics," she admits.
