tUnE yArDs is the rather extraordinary performing title taken by Merrill Garbus. This California based lo-fi artist is the owner of a tribal sound equally as striking as the stage name. Thankfully, as her debut album BiRd BrAiNs proved, she doesn't just experiment with typography. It took two years to laboriously compile the self-produced record, using a digital voice recorder and free mixing software. The final product was an exciting mixture yodelling vocal loops, drum distortion, and the melodic warmth provided by her primary instrument, a ukelele.
Since the release, tUnE yArDs have been continually touring and gaining a great live reputation. Garbus captivates crowds using loop pedals to add each layer of the mix seperately. Recently she performed a highly regarded set with the backing of a band for the first time at this year's SXSW festival.
With the second album, Who Kill, being released by 4AD on 18th April, and a huge list of new live dates, 2011 looks to be a promising year. Garbus once again takes production duties on and this time had a full studio at her disposal rather than being confined by the limitations of a voice recorder. Despite this slicker approach the album promises to mirror the improvisational quality of live shows. Below is the official video to current single, Bizness, unveiled just three days ago. The track is available for download from the official website.
