It seems like a lifetime since Burial's second LP Untrue was released. In actual fact, it was only four years ago, but it still left fans with an unfillable void, and his distinctly unique brand of emotional and ambient electronic music has been hailed from every corner. Encapsulating the sound of London - both its beauty and its underbelly - Burial consistently manages to amaze by stirring up intense feelings in listeners.
The good news is he's back. The great news is he's back on very top form. NYC is taken from an EP entitled Street Halo, which being released through Kode9's label Hyperdub, the same as all Burial releases.
What amazes us about Burial is his ability to make consistently good music in the same style, but never make it monotonous, never make it dull and always make you feel something. NYC is perfect evidence of this, and at seven and a half minutes, is a relentlessly beautiful song in which garage style drums are mixed with his trademark ethereal vocal samples, woven together along with sweeping chords.
This anonymous artist has had two critically acclaimed records, and Untrue was even nominated for a Mercury Music Prize in 2007. His life in inner city London has heavily influenced his music - the sound of a grim cloudy day punctuated by a ray of sunshine. Originally, he started making songs for his brother, but was discovered by the aforementioned dubstep pioneer and sonic warfare expert Kode9, who signed him to his label. We can only hope that Burial brings out a new album this year, which is sure to be another record brimming with gorgeous vocals and morose pads and chords.
