On the second night of New To Q Sessions in late January, hundreds watched in awe as the powerful voice and captivating gothic persona of Clare Maguire filled an intimate venue during her first ever headline show. Those who were lucky enough to see the Q Award winner in action will certainly have a fondness for the preceding act, CocknBullKid, who gave a colourful pop performance.

25-year-old Hackney resident, Anita Blay, is the owner of not just an impressive voice, but also the lyrical intelligence to make for an exciting pop record. "Having something to say is more important than just being able to do something," she explains in relation to those who merely posess singing talent. Her debut, Adulthood, is set for release in May, and as the title suggests, will encompass an array of emotions experienced in her journey from the cocoon of teenage depression to present day success.

Behind these uplifting melodies are lyrics inspired by the introspective, tortured artist perspective similar to that connected with Morrissey, a favourite of her teenage years. Previous single, Hold On To Your Misery, for example, is an anti-anthem which contrasts an uplifting commercial beat with the message that misery and insecurities are good things, to be kept close at heart.

Upcoming single, Asthma Attack, further articulates the bi-polar nature of its creator, a track which struggles to find a middle ground amidst the emotional extremities of inner city life. "You give me an asthma attack, still you keep me coming back," she sings while trying to look melancholic, but dancing girls keep getting in the way.
