A two-piece from Iceland, Feldberg - Eberg (Einar Tönsberg) and Rósa Birgitta Ísfeld - make glorious, glacial pop music that, not wanting to subscribe too readily to stereotypes, sounds just like it was born out of the cold, stark and beautiful Reykjavik landscape where they both reside. Don't Be A Stranger is the title track from their debut album, which was released in Iceland in 2009, the States in 2010 and, finally, over here this year. It's both jaunty and haunting, simple but affecting, Ísfeld's plaintive but chilling cries of 'Oh, I need you now' permeated with the longing of the hungriest heart.
While the lilting chimes in the background are reminiscent of fellow Icelanders Sigur Ros, they're overlayed with an upbeat but disconsolate tune. Its poignancy is at odds with the party-themed, stop-motion video, but that makes it all the more compelling. It's not just this song that's enticing, either - the whole album shimmers with a similar, spectral beauty.
If you like what you see and hear and are free tonight, the band are playing as part of Ja Ja Ja's regular Nordic showcase tonight at The Lexington in London.
