Foster The People are a three-piece electro-indie collective from Los Angeles, California, consisting of Mark Foster (keyboards, guitar, lead vocals), Mark Pontius (drums) and Cubbie Fink (bass, backing vocals). Formed in October of 2009, the group released a three track EP in the U.S in January of this year, but Houdini will be their debut single over here in the UK.
Opening with a sped-up drum sequence reminiscent of Billy Squier's The Big Beat (as sampled on Dizzee Rascal's Fix-Up, Look Sharp) Houdini jumps in immediately with summery feel-good vibes. It's a catchy piece of electronica-based indie-rock in which a synthy, shuffling rhythm accompanies the track's high pitched vocals, while the instantly addictive chorus offers slightly obscure images and thoughts ("Sometimes I wanna disappear"). A decent amount of harmonious 'ooh'ing will likely endear Houdini to crossover appeal, so expect to hear it playing around parks and in tent sites at summer festivals this year.
