Independent record labels set up shop on London's Berwick St

Comments

Although it seems MP3s are taking over the world, there will always be people who prefer
vinyl and CDs (or even cassettes!), as the ever-increasing popularity of Record Store Day - which takes place on 16 April this year - firmly attests.

2011 boasts a bonus event for music Luddites everywhere, as on 21 May, some of the Europe's leading independent labels will get together for a unique event in the heart of London's Soho - the Independent Label Market.

This event will take place on Berwick Street, where the founders / heads of numerous independent labels will sell their wares directly to the customers, but at a market stall rather than in a store. Each label boss will man their own stall and spend the day meeting their public.

It's an apt location, as Berwick Street and the surrounding area has always been very well known for its independent record shops. Although many of these have now closed due to the emergence of digital downloading, with a host of exclusive releases, artist appearances and much more, for one day at least, it seems that the good old days of the record store will return.

So far, the following labels have confirmed they're taking part, with five more to be announced on Monday 18 April:

Domino
Rough Trade
Bella Union
Tri-Angle
Merok
Angular Records
House Anxiety
Roundtable
Heavenly
Transparent
Weird World
R&S
Moshi Moshi

  • How do other indie labels get involved? I run a new label with releases out now and in May, it would be a great opportunity to meet the people.
