From the far reaches of the desolate north comes Moddi, real name Pål Moddi Knudsen, a somber Norwegian accordion-wielding, violin-friendly singer-songwriter, whose music reflects, well, pretty much exactly that.
Recorded in 2009, and released in Norway more than a year ago, his debut album Floriography is now trickling down to the continent, much thanks to a substantial grant received from a-ha (yes, a-ha!) as part of their generous campaign to aid new bands and artists keen on tapping into the international market.
Magpie Eggs is one the album's many stand-out tracks, and makes an ambitious attempt to bridge Björk with Beirut and Rufus Wainwright; melancholic strings, vocals and bonkers lyrics all firmly in place. It's nevertheless irrevocably a heart-warming and beautifully constructed piece of melancholic folk-pop, steadily pushing towards the song's inevitable climax - centered around an ephemeral half-tone change - before ebbing out after five and half minutes. Somewhat melodramatic perhaps, but certainly representative of the midnight sun / winter darkness of Moddi's native Senja.
Floriography is out today.
