Even if they don't know it by name, the vast majority of people will be aware of and recognise Just What I Needed - the iconic (and still kind of ubiquitous) song by Boston new wave heroes The Cars. Released in 1978, it still sounds fresh and modern and was, along with the rest of their back catalogue - six albums released between 1978 and 1987 - a testament to the catchy pop writing skills of main man (and now major producer) Ric Ocasek.
After an absence of 24 years, however, the band - minus original bassist/singer Benjamin Orr, who died of pancreatic cancer on October 3, 200 - have reconvened, and have begun work on a new studio album, the first time they've done so since 1987's final hurrah, Door To Door. Sad Song is taken from that album, and immediately, the chugging guitar line and soaring melody - not to mention Ocasek's distinctive vocals - make it seem like they've never been away. Impressively, the song manages to capture the essence of The Cars as it was back in the day, yet simultaneously updates their sound for 2011. Presumably the result of Ocasek's work with bands such as Weezer, Bad Religion, No Doubt and Suicide, The Cars' return doesn't sound false or forced, but effortless and natural. Let's just hope that relationships between the members remain good - it was personal tensions that ultimately led to the demise of the band the first time around. Nevertheless, it's good to have them back. You might say it was just what we needed...
