Vocal chords are overrated, don't you think? They let babies scream on planes, angered van drivers shout expletives at you from their windows and allow Alice Glass to have a career out of screeching incomprehensible 'lyrics' over the Contra soundtrack. Anyway, Brontide have decided that they don't need a vocalist, and rightly so, as their exquisite brand of math-rock really does speak for itself.
Featuring members from such acts as I Was A Cub Scout and La Roux, the band have recently toured with Seattle oddballs Minus The Bear, as well as playing alongside The xx, Rolo Tomassi and Pulled Apart By Horses.
Matador is the first single from their debut album Sans Souci. Beginning with a quiet series of rim shots, it builds up with the typical math rock layering; one pretty high-pitched riff laced into another. It continues to build, darker, deeper guitars entering the fray, with a nice low and warm bass tone. The lack of a vocalist really allows you to concentrate on what they're doing with their instruments; all the little ghosts notes here and there. It crescendos into a fantastically dark K-hole of a finale, as heavy riffs and crash cymbals collide and explode.
A progressive song in every sense of the word, Matador is a great glimpse at what Brontide will surerly have to offer in the future.

Saw this band at the Firebug in Leicester.
