The video for Tellison's new single Say Silence (Heaven and Earth), taken from their forthcoming album The Wages of Fear, sees the band dressed up in army regalia. Sure enough, the London foursome also deliver their music with a military precision: bursts of guitar tidily wrap around an upbeat rhythm, a rich vocal line sneaking through corners of snaking bass, the song's mammoth chorus crashing in with impressive impact.
The band has been coughing up uplifting bouts of pop punk magic since 2003, but mainstream success has mostly eluded them. On the evidence of this sterling effort, as well as the antecedent single Collarbone, this might be about to change. Say Silence... casts minds back to the light melodic bite and carefree charisma of late 1990s American jugular indie, and plays out in a summery haze of sing-along vocals and buoyant drums. "I was brave once and had this fire in me but it went out," barks front man Stephen H Davidson, though you wouldn't believe it from his impassioned wails. The result is part Scot-rockers Dananananaykroyd with the chaos reigned in, part American emo-kingpins Taking Back Sunday and entirely ace. They even manage to get away with quoting Hamlet...
