North London four-piece Yuck were a recently featured as a New To Q in issue 298, and are seeing quite a buzz swell up about them. Here, the noisy alt-rockers - whose debut eponymous album was released earlier this year to great critical acclaim - detail some of the songs and artists that have inspired them as a band. It's a pretty great playlist, too, so get listening and let us know what you think.
Qthemusic.com Spotify Playlist: Yuck's Roots and Influences
Red House Painters - Grace Cathedral Park
Daniel Blumberg (vocals/guitar): This is the opening song to the most beautiful album ever.
Dinosaur Jr. - Crumble
Max Bloom (guitar): This is from their album Beyond. It's a really simple and melodic song, and one of our favorite songs by Dinosaur Jr.
Teenage Fanclub - Everything Flows
Max: This was an early song by Teenage Fanclub. They definitely went on to do some more ambitious things, but this will always be my favorite song by them. They still play it as a closer to their live set today! I guess they know it's what I want to hear!
Wilco - Impossible Germany
Max: My favorite Wilco album is Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, but this is my favorite song of theirs. This was after Nels Cline joined the band on lead guitar. After he joined, something definitely happened to their music from that point onwards. Listen to the solo in this song - I saw Wilco live once, he's definitely the best guitarist I have ever stood in front of.
Superchunk - Hyper Enough
Max: The first Superchunk album I heard was Come Pick Me Up, produced by Jim O'Rourke, and that got me into him afterwards. This song isn't on it though, I heard it on an EP. It's one of my favorite songs by them. They write really simple and exciting songs; this appeals to me most about them.
The Replacements - I Will Dare
Max: This is the first track from their album, Let It Be. It's a really good opener, but I love more than anything that they called this album Let It Be. Who names their album that?!
East River Pipe - Bring On The Loser
Max: This is from the album Poor Fricky. There's something really melancholy but so intriguing about East River Pipe. I love the way he records his music, it's really understated. His style is really out of the ordinary but so interesting.
Big Star - What's Going Ahn
Max: Big Star make some of the best songs I've ever heard. They're such simple songs but their guitar lines and melodies are really complex. I find them really inspiring.
Video Nasties - Dead Again
Daniel: Video Nasties must be the most overlooked band ever. This is from their only album, called On All Fours. It's an incredible song. I used to go and watch them play all the time, they were very inspiring.
Tindersticks - Raindrops
Daniel: I used to listen to a lot of Tindersticks in the bookshop I worked at when Max and I first started Yuck. It was very dark and dusty and amazing, and Royal Trux wasn't appropriate
Grandaddy - He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's The Pilot
Max: Their album The Sophtware Slump is one of my favorite albums. There are not that many albums that take you from start to finish in this way. I don't generally listen to lyrics, but I find Jason Lytle's are really inventive and imaginative. This is the first track from the album, and probably my favorite album opener ever.
The Zombies - Hung Up On A Dream
Max: This is a track from the album Odessey & Oracle, which is one of the best albums I have ever heard. It's hard to pick one song when every track is consistently so good throughout, but this is such a beautiful song. All their songs are incredibly complex, but so easy to listen to, and so emotionally affecting.
Lambchop - Paperback Bible
Daniel: This is the opener of their album Damaged. Lambchop's album openers would probably make the best album of all time! Anyway, this song is perfect, and I put it at the end because it's the opposite and that's nice.
