U2, Radiohead, Primal Scream... The 10 best bands of Glastonbury Day One

Comments

Taking stock of the first day (24 June) of the 2011 Glastonbury Festival, here's Q's rundown of the ten best acts yesterday - plus follow today's action live via our Glastonbury Festival twitter feed.

U2
They took a big gamble with their reputation - and took on a driving rain storm blowing their sound everywhere - but Bono and co can be happy as it paid off. Not quite a Glastonbury classic, but plenty of special moments - including Bono singing Jerusalem in honour of King Arthur and a cameo from an astronaut orbiting the earth - saw the band thrive in the rain.
Key track: Where The Streets Have No Name

Primal Scream
With Glastonbury's lay lines, it's no wonder that Bobby G and co's Screamadelica set had the feel of a righteous rock n roll ceremony. Blissed-up despite the torrential rain, Gillespie proved transcendental when performing tracks from his band's beloved 1991 album, and then tore the place up with a few greatest hits at the end.
Key track: Come Together

Fleet Foxes
Undeterred by the worsening weather, festival-goers turned out en masse to watch Seattle six-piece Fleet Foxes deliver their blustery breed of wistful, folksy blues. Meandering through cuts from their latest album, singer Robin Pecknold's poignant lyricism and dulcet tones had the rain-sodden revelers enchanted.
Key track: The Shrine / The Argument

BB King
The American legend, 85 years young, proved just why he's known as the King Of Blues with a sharp set, simmering with soul and verve. King's trademark bluesy riffs and gravelly vocals ensured Glastonbury has a new 'veterans set' that people will be talking about for years.
Key track: Guess Who

Radiohead
The worst kept secret on site as the massive crowds filling the hill that overlooks the Park Stage proved, but Radiohead did indeed make a 'surprise' appearance. A set heavy on new songs failed to resonate in the way the band have done previously at the festival, but Thom Yorke and co provided a lovely Glastonbury bonus.
Key track: Street Spirit

Wu Tang Clan
If you believed the band, this storming Pyramid Stage set nearly didn't happen thanks to UK Customs. "They treated us like the fuckin' Taliban," Method Man told the packed crowd, however that was the limit to the bad vibes as the Staten Island hip-hop gang's energy gave Glastonbury no option but to have a good time.
Key track: Gravel Pit

Mumford & Sons
If you're going to dance in the mud and the rain, a hoedown is probably the best way to get your feet moving. Taking a break from the studio, Mumford & Sons made sure the Other Stage got just that as an entire field moved to the pluck of a banjo.
Key Track: Little Lion Man

Metronomy
Being the second band of the opening day on the Pyramid Stage is never an easy task, but Devon's Metronomy gave it some Glasto gusto and can rightly take credit as being the band that really got this year's festival going.
Key Track: A Thing For Me

Morrissey
"I'll sing quickly, I know you all want to see U2,"' suggested Morrissey as he returned to the Pyramid Stage, but if the chorus of disapproval was anything to go by there is still a lot of love for Manchester's finest. And he duly rewarded the loyalists in the crowd with a mixture of his solo songs and plenty of favourites from The Smiths.
Key Track: There Is A Light That Never Goes Out

Katy B
It was squishing room only for Katy B both on and off stage as the Magnetic Man collaborator packed out the East Dance arena. Rabble rouser MC Tippa squeezed in with B's horn-laden live band, while the crowd did their part getting sweaty for tracks from the Peckham-ite's debut On A Mission.
Key Track: Katy On A Mission

  • Fancy Radiohead using glasto as an opportunity to plug thier new album, i'll probably download the album off a free site rather than buy it, in protest
