Amy Winehouse has been found dead in her London flat this afternoon (23 July).
Police have confirmed the singer's death, stating that it is currently being treated as "unexplained".
The Metropolitan Police's Superintendent Raj Kohli issued the following statement:
"Police were called by London Ambulance Service to a house in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05hrs today, following reports of a woman found deceased. On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female who was pronounced dead at the scene. Next of kin have been informed, and I can confirm that officers are now satisfied that the deceased is Amy Winehouse.
"Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained and there have been no arrests in connection with the incident.
I am aware of reports suggesting this death is the result of a suspected drugs overdose, but I would like to re-emphasise that no post-mortem examination has yet taken place and it would be inappropriate to speculate on the cause of death. I would urge media to avoid speculation that might cause further distress to Ms Winehouse's family at this difficult time."
Sky News had reported that sources had told them that Winehouse died following a suspected drug overdose.
A post-mortem will take place on Monday (25 July) at St Pancras Mortuary. An inquest into her death will open and be adjourned at St Pancras Coroner's Court at 2.30 pm (BST) on the same day.
Her family have issued a statement asking for privacy at this time. "Our family has been left bereft by the loss of Amy, a wonderful daughter, sister, niece," they said. "She leaves a gaping hole in our lives. We are coming together to remember her and we would appreciate some privacy and space at this terrible time."
The singer was said to be working on a much delayed third album at the time of her death.
Her label, Universal Records, have issued the following statement: "We are deeply saddened at the sudden loss of such a gifted musician, artist and performer. Our prayers go out to Amy's family, friends and fans at this difficult time."
She made her debut with the jazz-inspired Frank in 2003, before releasing her internationally successful second album, the acclaimed Back To Black, in 2006 which won her five Grammy Awards, a Brit and a Q Award.
She had been seen in public as recently as last week (20 July) when she made a guest
appearance during the set of her 15 year-old goddaughter Dionne Bromfield at the iTunes Festival held at London's Roundhouse.
Many of Winehouse's fellow musicians have paid tribute to the singer, with Lily Allen writing on Twitter, "It's just beyond sad, there's nothing else to say. She was such a lost soul, may she rest in peace", while David Arnold called her "one of the funniest and loveliest people I'd met. She wasn't well... A genuine raw talent and a sweetheart."
Mark Ronson, who produced Back To Black, paid his tribute saying: "She was my musical soul mate and like a sister to me. This is one of the saddest days of my life."
