As has been widely reported, one of the surprise victims of the London riots has been the country's indie labels who had a large amount of stock destroyed when a warehouse in Enfield was attacked by arsonists on Monday (8 August).
Owned by Sony, not only did they loose 1.5m CDs in the blaze, but with indie label distribution company PIAS renting space in the building, many of the indies had their physical stock destroyed too.
The Beggars Group - who have the 4AD, Matador, Rough Trade and XL Recordings labels - estimate that lost 750,000 units of their stock was destroyed in the fire, but alongside PIAS and Sony's contingency plans, they are bringing in stock from around the world, though as they point out "It could take up to three months to replenish our vinyl stock", adding that Beggars "are better placed than other to react".
For many smaller labels the fire represents a real challenge as cash flow and projected incomes will be affected by their inability to sell physical records while they wait for insurance payouts and the manufacturing of new records.
Currently there are plans for various fund raising events in the works and a fund has been set up by the Association Of Independent Music - the trade body for many indie labels - so that organisations and individuals can donate to help labels who find themselves in a financial pickle. See Musicindie.com for full details.
The other way music fans can help is to simply buy a record from one of the labels who are distributed by PIAS (see a full list below), either by downloading an album or heading to a record shop this weekend.
So Q is joining the likes of Thequietus.com and suggesting some great releases that were distributed by PIAS that you might want to search out and buy this weekend:
Paul Rees, Editor-in-Chief
The Go Betweens - Oceans Apart (Lo-Max)
Aussie stalwarts re-group after elephantine hiatus and deliver masterclass in literate pop.
Eve Barlow, Deputy Production Editor
Warpaint - The Fool (Rough Trade)
One of the most captivating debuts of 2010, this LA female foursome reel listeners in with their intoxicating, nocturnal indie jams.
Niall Doherty, Associate Editor (Reviews)
These New Puritans - Hidden (Angular)
A daring, ambitious second album from Southend most angular art-rockers - astonishingly not nominated for a Mercury Prize in 2010.
Simon McEwen, Production Editor
Roots Manuva Meets Wrongtom's Duppy Writer (Big Dada)
Hard-Fi's DJ Wrongtom reggaefies the Stockwell rappers back catalogue with stunning results.
Chris Catchpole, Now Editor
Various - 300% Dynamite (Soul Jazz)
Third - and best - instalment of Soul Jazz's impeccable series of classic dub, roots, calypso, ska and dancehall comps. Quite possibly the best BBQ mix tape of all time.
Matt Yates, Associate Copy Editor
The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow (Sub Pop)
Inspired second LP from James Mercer's gifted Anglophiles (pictured), fit to burst with songwriting of the highest calibre, all breezy of melody and subtle of emotion.
Paul Stokes, Associate Editor (Digital)
Suuns - Zeroes QC (Secretly Canadian)
A head-spinningly beautiful mix of sonic shades, dark atmospheres and infective rhythms from the Montreal band.
Joe Bishop, Intern
Creep - Days (Young Turks)
Pitch black doom laden trip hop by female duo from Brooklyn, with Romy of The xx featuring on the spooky title track.
Plus we have a guest suggestion from Mark Ronson, who discovered the vinyl stock of his Record Collection album was destroyed in the same fire.
