Musician and producer Thomas Dolby will be on Q Radio this Sunday (2 October) from 2pm (BST) as our guest single reviewer.
The Hyperactive! singer is the guest on the Q Show and along with getting to grips with this week's releases and picking some of his own favourite songs, as well as discussing the industry in the past and how it affected upstarting bands.
"It's changed enormously and it's really democratised. It's a wide open playing field, really, these days. When you're 17/18, and you've got talent, you believe that one day the public are going to hear your music and fall in love with it and you'll be a superstar overnight," he says.
"When I was 18 that was a fib! You first needed to get a tape to an A&R man and there was this whole other obstacle course to get through before the public ever got to judge for itself. These days you can be in your pyjamas in your back room on a laptop, make a video on Youtube and wake up in the morning and you're a global superstar.
"I think it's a much more healthy situation today for young musicians starting out, and music fans. You've got a wider choice that hasn't been filtered by the record companies."
Tune in from 2pm on Sunday as the old schooler talks to Q's Niall Doherty, and reviews this week's singles including offerings from Noel Gallagher, Lana Del Rey and Professor Green, while we play selected highlights from this month's Q50. The show is also repeated on Tuesday (4 October) at 8pm (BST).
