"If its meant to be the universe will throw it back to us, we're all in for some sort of ride," declares singer Liam O'Donnell of the prospects for his London-based group Various Cruelties.
If there seems a poetic lilt to his take on his band's destiny - not to mention the fact they're named after a painting by Ed Ruscha - it's probably because of his genes. He's a distant descendant of Oscar Wilde.
That poetic outlook is present in their music too, as demonstrated by the newcomers' third single, Chemicals (out 3 October).
"It's about trying to find something or someone to live for," he explains. "While at the same time wondering if life is out of our control and if it's all mapped out in the stars beforehand."
Whoever is pulling the strings, this single hints at a promising destiny.
