The Stone Roses announced this afternoon (October 18) that they will be reuniting for two Manchester shows next summer.
The band, confirmed they will be playing the city's Heaton Park on 29 and 30 June, 2012, at a press conference held at London's Soho Hotel, which was attended by all four founding members: drummer Alan 'Reni' Wren, frontman Ian Brown, guitarist John Squire and bassist Gary 'Mani' Mounfield.
Along with the shows - see our sister site Aloud.com for the latest ticket news - the band also discussed a possible new record, a world tour and more. Here are the ten key quotes from The Stone Roses themselves about the reunion:
1. Why reform?
"I think we're great, I think we've still got it and I think we've still got something to give to people. I think in times like these we can uplift people. We're [also] doing it for ourselves, I'm not going to lie. We wanted to announce our reunion the day after the riots. But it was important that we played together first. Just in case someone said: How do you know it won't be shit? I know it's not going to be shit because we have played together and it sounds magic." Ian Brown
2. Will there be a new album?
"We are doing new songs, yeah. It's not a trip down memory lane. We hope there will be [a new album] but we said that before, didn't we? It sounds better than the old days. Mani has had another fifteen years playing so he's even better now." Ian Brown
3. Why reunite now after the year's of rumours?
"It was the loss of Mani's mum that brought about the chain of events that led us all to this room today. A beautiful thing has come out of a sad situation." Ian Brown
"It just goes to show you great things can come out of grey clouds." Reni
4. What about the members' other projects?
"With Primal Scream, I'm going to have to back off. It's heartbreaking because they have been my family for the past fifteen years. They saved my arse. They might be saving my arse again [if it flops]! I've been allowed to go follow my dream. I'm eternally grateful to them." Mani
"For me I've parked my solo thing in a lay-by and jumped into another vehicle." Ian Brown
5. Arranging the reunion wasn't easy
"It felt like Everest..." John Squire
"...But show me the mountain and I will climb it..." Mani
6. What was it like to see John Squire and Ian Brown patch things up?
"It was amazing. Somewhat bizarre. It was beautiful. Even if the band never reformed, I wanted to see these two repair their friendship. Rock'n'roll is more than just music."Reni
7. What do they think of the current music scene?
"Boring. Very, very bland. Very corporate. No one's saying nothing. But the Dirty North - they are great." Reni
8. Why only announce Manchester shows to start with?
"It's important to me because it's the people of Manchester that got us out of Manchester. It was our dream after five years unemployed. Those last gigs before we went national you could feel people willing us to go on and do great things. The people of Manchester sent us on our way." Ian Brown
9. World domination is in their sights
"Our plan is to shake up the world. We're going to start off in our hometown and then take it around the world. If anyone buys a ticket, of course." Ian Brown
10. How long will the resurrection last?
"We'll ride this until the wheels come off - like we did last time." Ian Brown
