Column - Adele, Pulp, Muse, Lady Gaga... who will do theme for the next James Bond film, Skyfall?
Men with white cats? Pah, Easy! Millionaire's with laser-touting space stations? Not even a scratch! The credit crunch? Ok it got a bit wobbly there but James Bond has once again survived and despite studio MGM's cash-flow problems delaying the spy's 23rd outing, it has been announced today (3 November) in London that Daniel Craig will return as 007 in Skyfall next year with American Beauty director Sam Mendes taking charge.
However what wasn't announced at the press conference is who is doing the next Bond Theme. It has been heavily rumoured that Adele and producer Paul Epworth have already landed the job - though at today's producers said they had "no one in mind, yet".
Still even if Adele is the favourite, with the winner of Best Track and Best Female at this year's Q Awards needing surgery to sort out her vocal problems, it might be worth Bond having one or two back-ups in mind. Here's are five suggestions for the Bond Theme B-Team:
Lady Gaga
More likely to play an arch villain - imagine her announcing "Ah Mr Bond I've been expecting you," from inside her Grammy egg - than sing the theme (though Madonna's awkward cameo in Die Another Day, proves pop icons don't always make good Bond baddies), but with all of Daniel Craig's films featuring American stars like Jack White so far, if it's not Adele, the House Of Gaga must be high up the produce's wish list.
Tinie Tempah
Might upstage Bond in the style stakes, but it would be interesting to get the Pass Out man's reinvention of a British classic.
Muse
Really Matt Bellamy and co should have done the theme for Quantum Of Solace, as not only does it virtually sound like one of their album titles but Bellamy is the only frontman on the planet who wouldn't blink about repeatedly using the word "quantum". In all seriousness, the roller coaster thrills of songs like Knights Of Cydonia suggest Muse could actually do something quite interesting within the Bond boundaries.
Gary Barlow
It's reportedly the best paid songwriting gig in film, so after putting up with all those chumps on X-Factor, Gary deserves something to make him smile.
Pulp
Jarvis and co were so in the running for Tomorrow Never Dies, they actually wrote and recorded a song - released as B-side Tomorrow Never Lies - but lost out to Sheryl Crow. With both Bond and Pulp coming back from the brink this year, it would be fitting to give Sheffield's finest a go, plus Jarvis would look excellent in the gun barrel from the opening sequence (even if we did mock it up ourselves).
And if those five aren't enough for them, Professor Green told Q he's definitely be up for doing a Bond Theme, although he admitted: "I might have to change my name, Professor Green is more likely to be an enemy of James Bond", while Noel Gallagher not only seems to be on first name terms with Daniel Craig, in this clip below, he admits he's up for doing it too. Over to you M...

THE LAST SHADOW PUPPETS should do the theme! I mean... The whole The Age of the Understatement would fit a James Bond film!

Put some strings behind Warpaint and you're pretty much sorted I'd say

Muse FTW! Mr. Matt Bellamy would be perfect for anything like this - hell, he'd make a great James Bond. A giggly, over-excited one at that.

Get Noel in there, He's got a tune that's got 007 all over it with Freaky Teeth.

What about something less mainstream like Nick Cave or Portishead ?

Portishead would indeed be a terrific choice, though probably unlikely. Another artist worth considering would be Siouxsie Sioux, considering a couple of songs from her last album would've made just perfect Bond tracks (namely Here Comes That Day and If It Doesn't Kill You). But since Bond movies are hardly that surprising anymore... well, Adele it is, then.
