Pete Townshend has attacked Apple for being a "digital vampire" as he delivered the inaugural John Peel Lecture in Salford last night. Discussing the "services" traditionally offered by labels, including guidance and nurturing, The Who guitarist asked: "Is there really any good reason why, just because iTunes exists in the wild west internet land of Facebook and Twitter, it can't provide some aspect of these services to the artists whose work it bleeds like a digital vampire, like a digital Northern Rock, for its enormous commission?" He also criticised file sharers, suggesting that people expecting to get music for free represented that something "has gone wrong with human morality and social justice". The Lecture held at the Lowry Theatre as part of the Radio Festival will take staged every year with a different speaker by BBC 6music.

Playing most of his solo album, the show also boasted several Oasis songs, including full band versions of classic B-sides Live By The Sea, Half The World Away and Talk Tonight, plus a stripped down section featuring Wonderwall and Supersonic before set closer Don't Look Back In Anger .
