Radiohead Vs The Tabloids: Paul McMullan on The Universal Sigh - Q306 preview

Comments

From getting the tables turned on him by Hugh Grant in The New Statesman, clashing with Steve Coogan on Newsnight and appearing at the Leveson inquiry into phone hacking, Paul McMullan has inadvertently become the face of tabloid journalism.

So what advice has he got for those trying to break into the business? Radiohead had a crack at this newspaper lark earlier in the year, marking the release of The King Of Limbs with free-sheet The Universal Sigh, created in collaboration with their visual guru Stanley Donwood. So what did the former News Of The World Deputy Features Editor make of it?

Get our latest issue, Q306, which is on sale now for his full verdict, but here's a taster of what McMullan made of Radiohead's stab at Page Three, which boasts a poem rather than naked ladies:

"Tabloids occasionally run poems, but this is just rambling nonsense. It's impenetrably shit. Page Three is for silly, funny, quirky stories and for pictures of girls with firm breasts commenting on philosophy."

Get Q306 now for the full verdict on The Universal Sigh, plus our review of 2011, a exclusive with Coldplay cover story, Q's albums of the year and much more.
