The National say they have been "burned" by the Twilight film franchise, after submitting music for the soundtrack. "We wrote and submitted a song several years ago for the first Twilight movie, which was rejected. Later, they asked us to write another one and I think we kind of passed on it. The second time, maybe, we felt burned from the first one," says singer Matt Berninger, who explained they were later asked by the vampire franchise for another song as they became more famous. "Yeah, we probably should have [submitted the rejected song again as new]. I think it was a good song, too. We were also asked to write a song for Crown Royale Liquor several years ago. And we did, and we submitted that. That was also ultimately rejected because it had too many awkward sexual references." He also joked that The Muppets will probably beat them to an Oscar nomination after both acts made this year's longlist.

The Live Music Bill, a piece of government legislation making it easier and less expensive for small venues in the UK to stage gigs, has been given the green light in parliament. "This is a great day for music," said Jo Dipple, acting chief executive of UK Music. "The Live Music Bill will make a real and positive difference to lives of musicians." The new rules will come into force once they're given Royal assent and mean small venues wanting to host live music events will no longer need a local authority entertainment licence.
