Lana Del Rey, The Weeknd, SBTRKT, Anna Calvi, WU LYF, Wretch 32... 2011 was vintage year for new music round these parts. Even though it's only the first week of January, 2012 is already giving it a pretty good run for its money in terms of brand new talent.
In terms of putting together our new issue - Q307 is out now - there were plenty of contenders for the Q Now pages, and some of those who didn't make the cut will certainly be knocking on the door for future issues. However here are the three that feature in the issue - get that now for full interviews with each act, but in the meantime here's why I wanted to include them.
First up is Jessie Ware is, who after lending her haunting vocals to tracks by SBTRKT and Joker, is stepping out on her own. Recent single Strangest Feeling is a goosebump-inducing piece of electronic, afterhours soul and positions Ware as the best placed star to break out of London's thriving underground dance scene.
Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs - aka Oxford based producer Orlando Higgingbottom - got his first break after entering a competition at London's Tate Modern to compose a piece inspired by a piece of modern art. He also likes to perform wearing a full body dinosaur dressing up outfit - as you do. After a series of acclaimed EPs featuring gentle, understated electro pop, TEED - as time conscious fans like to call him - releases his highly anticipated full-length debut in February. Keep an eye our for it.
Finally we have Minneapolis five-piece Howler. Skinny jeans, even skinnier torsos and with a winning mix of scuzzy riffs and Smart Alec nonchalance they're already being talked up as heirs to The Strokes' elegantly dishevelled throne. Rumour has it one of the band is related to Prince too... Their debut LP America Give Up is out on 16 January and you can catch them live at east London's XOYO on 26 January as part of Q Now: The Sessions.
