Pulled Apart By Horses are set to release their new album, Tough Love on Monday (23 January), with a UK tour set to follow in February. Clearly the well-fancied Brit rockers look like they're going to have a busy year, which might explain their choice of playlist for Q. Possibly making the most of the calm before the storm of releasing and touring their new album bassist Rob Lee serves up a selection of tunes for the kitchen and the dishes you should be cooking while listening to these albums. "Feeling peckish? The kitchen is a good place to listen to music and it's good to be inspired while cooking," he explains. "Here are a few of the albums and ingredients in my kitchen.
King Crimson - Red
"Multi-layered, complex, time consuming, a lasagne will always be made better if made whilst listening to this album. With true Fripp discipline in mind, it should be made from scratch: sauces in jars are not allowed. Bruford's adamant beats in the opening track provide a stable rhythm for finely chopping your onions, celery, garlic and carrots. Stir in your red wine, plum tomatoes and puree while taking in One More Red Nightmare. After this, the appropriate contrast of Providence will guide you through the lingering and often stressful process of making your bechamel sauce. Finally, watch your creation bubbling away in the oven along with the epic Starless."
Deftones - Diamond Eyes
"It would have to be an intense Mexican dish of course, Fajitas are the perfect accompaniment for this fiery album. You've Seen The Butcher is a fitting groove to carefully slice up your beef or chicken and marinate in some killer chilis, herbs and spices."
The Mars Volta - Frances The Mute
"Spice with meat? Chili Con Carne! This album is an awesome combination of fiery Spanish extravagance and American Post-Hardcore Rock. However, so many more ingredients are combined in this elaborate, progressive process. Secret ingredients include, fresh grated ginger, lemon, dark chocolate, Flea and John Frusciante."
Bruce Springsteen - Born In The USA
"Americans may not be world leaders in cuisine, but they do one thing damn well, the mighty Burger. I have my own secret recipe which I call the Boss Burger. The rest of the band also call it the Bobby Burger which is equally fitting for this classic quarter pounder of Americana. Count how many times The Boss refers to Bobby on this album."
AC/DC - Highway To Hell
"When we played some shows in Australia last year we were psyched to find that, in true Aussie style, our hotel had a barbecue! We fired one-up and our Australian tour manager said it was the best international barbecue he'd ever had! We're talking tradition here, so it has to be the unforgettable Bon Scott.
"
Weezer - Pinkerton
"I've always thought of this as a winter album, maybe it's the snowy front cover. I recently found out that they demoed and started recording it during a Christmas break. It's definitely as dark and brooding as Weezer gets, Rivers Cuomo's cynical lyrics deal with his new found fame and problematic relationships. In response I like to concoct something comforting and heart-warming like a good old fashioned Stew and Dumplings."
Best Coast - Crazy For You
"Surf-Pop with a cool fuzzy, hazey, retro feel. Short and sweet but timeless. Goes well with the diner-classic: Tuna melt and Fries."
Warpaint - The Fool
"I'm not quite sure what to call this dish, but it's salmon marinated in soy sauce, honey, lemon, ginger, chilli and spring onion. There's something subtly sumptuous about this album which I'll never be able to categorise."
Kvelertak - Kvelertak
"This album deserves a feast fit for a Viking warrior: fuel for conquering new lands. Roast leg of lamb stuffed with rosemary, anchovies and garlic, served with roast potatoes and a mountain of green vegetables, washed down with Mjod."
Queen - A Kind Of Magic
"One recipe: Fried Chicken! Bon appetit."
