Q Now: The Sessions Who Are Ya? Clock Opera

Comments

Next week (23-27 January) Q Now: The Sessions take over London's XOYO for a series of gigs. Each day this week we're speaking to one of the acts who'll be playing and finding out a bit more about the fresh talent on show. And if you want to be there, enter our competition to win tickets now.

Who are ya?
"Guy Connelly from Clock Opera!"

What are your qualifications?
"I started the band on my own originally just over two and a half years ago, fiddling about with the noises, figuring out new techniques I had to use, and making interesting sounds before songs. I've been a songwriter for a while so it was inevitable that they would become songs, and would go beyond the experimental. When I had enough of those little bit I formed the band around that and I guess we've been developing as a band ever since."

What would you have on your rider for your Q show if money was no object?
"Probably go-karts. We'd ride them around the venue. I'm a recent convert to motor sport after years of having not been interested in it at all. Preferably we'd have a new set of karts for every show we played. Apparently LCD Soundsystem was backstage one time, bored with nothing to do, so he tweeted that he wanted a bike, and people just bought about ten bikes to the venue. That's the definition of success I think."

What do you think of the other acts on the bill with you?
"I only know one song of Dry The River's and I thought it was really good. We played Castlepalooza in Ireland with them. It's shaping up to be a really good night."

What's your plan for world domination this year?
"Complete and total like everyone else probably. We've got our album coming out in April, I believe there's going to be a tour around that. We're kind of in the stages of preparation at the moment really. We've done all the music and all the essential stuff and now we're doing the other bits that people expect you to do when you're in a band these days: videos and content and all that stuff. We like to have a hand in absolutely everything we do."

Which song of yours should people get their dancing shoes on for at the show?
"People really try to dance at our gigs, some will try and dance regardless of what's going on with the songs. We had one guy when we played at The Lexington, just dancing completely without reserve. I was trying to encourage everyone to join in as best I could. If there isn't a song that makes people jump up and down there's definitely a few songs that'll make them think about it. Once And For and Belonging seem to really get people going live."

What's your motto?
"Ah, that's tough... It's probably going to have to be thinking about things for a long time and not answering. My Latin's not good [it doesn't have to be Latin - Classics Ed] Rousing rabble... Arousing rabble... Rousing rabble and anyone else who wants to be roused or aroused. It's not catchy but with a few more weeks of thinking about it I should have it down."

Which one track of yours should we listen to before your Q Now: The Sessions show?
"Once And For All (above), now that's a rabble rouser! It was one of the earlier songs we wrote. It came out from when I was a kid and I had an obsession about not forgetting anything, and the feeling that you know what you think is right, but you don't understand why people don't think you're right. Then your mind changes and you forget what it was like to be you back then. Originally it was about losing contact with your younger self, but everyone seems to be making a connection with it since the video came out, so that's really cool."
