10 things we learned at last night's 2012 Brit Awards with Adele, Blur, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, Noel Gallagher & more
1. Adele making the news is less important than showing the news
Overshadowing an otherwise good show, the decision to cut Adele short to squeeze the awards in before the news seemed a tad odd, if not a little rude. Having virtually subsidised the British music industry over the last 12 months surely she can say what she wants when she wants? Host James Cordon has since apologised on Twitter, but the gentlemanly thing to do would have been to tell the producers to get stuffed and let Adele speak.
2. Flipping the bird is in all XL Recordings contracts... possibly
Still the singer got her own back for being cut short, giving the awards the middle finger as she left the stage, a bit like labelmate M.I.A.'s Superbowl moment. She later made it clear it was directly firmly at the organisers and not her fans.
3. Coldplay's entire kit can be stored in a small loft
Following their show-opening set on a small stage at the front of a long catwalk, all the band's gear was neatly winched-up into the ceiling where it stayed all night. So that's why Gwyneth's gaff is so clean. We're sure being very tidy counted towards them winning Best British Group.
4. Noel Gallagher is louder than everyone else
Not sure why, but The Chief's performance of AKA... What A Life - completely with an unannounced/ please sir can I be in the band, guest spot from Chris Martin on keys - sounded mightier than everyone else who played live this year.
5. A year is such a long time in music that Plan B isn't actually quite sure what year it currently is
Having won in 2011, the rapper was on hand to dish out Best British Male to Ed Sheeran, and admitted a lot had happened since he'd been on The O2 stage 12 months earlier. So much in fact it he wasn't sure if it had been more than 12 months. "Brits... 2012?" he nervously asked before someone cued the VT.
6. George Michael still knows how to mix it
Looking well after his recent bout of pneumonia, the Wham man not only swaggered onstage like a true pop icon, but he cheekily caused a bit of trouble, deliberately mentioning the wrong credit card brand when handing out Best British Album.
7. Ed Sheeran has played a lot of gigs
We know this because every time the double winner (British Male and British Breakthrough) was mentioned on the night, the large number of gigs he did before getting signed were also recounted in the same sort of tone usually reserved for Arctic explorers or astronauts. Playing gigs? How quaint, has no one told him about X-Factor?
8. The Brits catwalk is longer than you think, isn't it Blur?
Damon Albarn and Phil Daniels tried to make use of the event's giant walkway during a storming version of Parklife, though after bounding along half it, the guest vocalist started lagging behind, suggesting that despite "there always been a bit of my heart devoted to it", Daniels hasn't been strolling around any parks lately. The band also performed Girls & Boys, Song 2, Tender and finished on This Is A Low as they picked-up the Outstanding Contribution To Music Award.
9. Arsenal's problems could be solved by The Trip
In one of the nights more unlikely pairing Black Eyed Peas' Will.I.Am and Cesc Fabregas were set to present Lana Del Rey with International Breakthrough, however with the Barcelona man switched to another category, The Trip's Rob Bryon was called in as a last minute replacement. Perhaps The Gunners could also call on the comedian to fill the Cesc-sized hole in their midfield... at least the post match interviews would be better.
10. It's now ok to live in a Country House.
Thanking a career's worth of people - including a touching moment singling out veteran manager Chris Morrison for a special ovation - Damon Albarn also included David Balfe in Blur's list of thanks, adding that the man who got sent up in Country House was in the room.
