Column - The best masks in music not starring Slipknot, Daft Punk, SBTRK, GWAR and more...

Whether it's to shroud their inherent hideousness, the old punk trick of still signing on while making music, or simply to disguise their true identity thus allowing their art to speak for itself (let's face they'll all say the former), lately there's been a flourish of bands who've taken to wearing masks (particularly of the ornithological kind - see B>E>A>K, The Four Owls and The Knife). Here are our ten favourite music masqueraders.
1.Slipknot
A clown, a pig, a gas mask, a diver crowned in nails and more - best keep them on, lads.
2. Mr. Bungle
Before the 'knot, funk-metal crazies Mr. Bungle wreaked havoc in Madonna, Nixon, Dart Vader and S&M headgear.
3. Daft Punk
These Gallic helmet heads invented the greatest party costumes ever, probably.
4. Los Straitjackets
These wrestler-masked rockabillies grapple with all manner of sounds to raunchy effect.
5. The Residents
Surreal art collective supposedly hid behind eye masks to have attention focused on their over-60-albums-released back catalogue.
6. The Knife
The gimmicky masks of Swedish siblings The Knife detract from their music - oh, that's cutting (boom and indeed, boom).
7. SBTRK (top)
Taking anonymous dance producer to its logical conclusions since 2009.
8. GWAR!
These gross-out comedy (s)punkers love to cover audiences in goo from behind elaborate horror-movie inspired costumes.
9. The Four Owls
These young, wise British rappers are well worth a tweet, just for their masks alone.
10. B>E>A>K
A mix of tropical, post-punk and bird-rock from this flighty five-piece from Sunderland.
