Q&a Adam Lambert - How to get from American Idol to working with Pharrell, Nile Rodgers & Queen

Comments

American Idol contestants are not normally the fodder for our weekly Q&a slot. Runners-up even less so. However when we were invited to hear Adam Lambert's second album Tresspassing, released in March, we were surprised to see that along with expected pop collaborators like Dr Luke, the singer had recorded with Pharrell Williams, cult indie type Sam Sparro (he of Black And Gold fame) and Nile Rodgers while rumours of further work with Queen's Brian May and Roger Taylor continue. Not just that, with the record's subject matter openly embracing Lambert's sexuality, the singer has used his mainstream launch-pad to challenge the preconceptions of American's right. All in all, a bloke worth sitting down and having a chat with then, which is exactly what we did...

How the devil are you?
"I'm good. I'm happy to be here, despite the cold. I love coming to the UK."

Is it harder for you in the UK because you are known a bit for American Idol, but we didn't see the show or get your back story?
"Yeah, the last album didn't get the attention it deserved but hopefully this time it will be different. But it's been three years. I'll always be associated with the show, which is great because I got to put myself out there and do great music. I really enjoyed my time on it, but hopefully people can start considering me as an artist. This album in particular is more of an artist's album. I got to co-write most of it, I was an executive producer, it's very much my thing! I did the styling, the artwork... I'm a control freak, but I'm doing it from a good place."

Unlike a lot of reality TV types you actually had a decent career as a singer, particularly in musical theatre, before you went on the show, while in the UK it seems you're supposed to have a decent sob story rather than talent. Why get involved?
"It was one of those things where they mentioned my background on the show once and then let it go. I did have to quit all my contracts which was a bit scary because that was my bread and butter, my health insurance... I had to quit and I didn't know if I'd be on the show. I was told, Quit so you can be considered. I thought Oh my God, it was kind of a risk but I knew it was worth taking because of the possible reward."

That reward is national exposure in a country the size of America?
"It's a huge platform, that's why I did it. There's nothing like it, you can't buy PR like it. Right before I auditioned I had started to write some music and I had some experience, talked to some people in the business and got a feel for what it's all about. I was still pretty green, but the impression I got was it's fucking hard to break into! I thought, well I'm a 27 year-old gay musical theatre dude/ club kid so this is not going to be an easy sell. Idol seemed the way to get myself out there."

Were you conscious that it was also a good opportunity to present someone with your sexuality to mainstream American, particularly as a large percentage of that audience might be prejudiced against you if they met you outside the show?
"The best opportunity on the show is to sing songs they identify with. That's the part of the show I approached like a strategy game. It's like Risk. Once you get comfortable in there, each week I would try to - in a good way - manipulate the audience, which is what entertainment is anyway. And it is a game show! My big strategy was to do something totally different each week to keep people guessing and do something that's the opposite to all the other performers so you get the attention."

With this album you're working with Pharrell on two tracks how did that come about? Lots of cash?
"I'm sure there's money involved, that's business, but he has to want to do something. He checked out a lot of what I did and he said to me, I really liked it when you sang the classic rock shit, the Queen songs, the Zeppelin, it's wild, I feel you're our generations Freddie!
I didn't even know how to accept that compliment from him. I'd walked into the session feeling not cool enough to be there! When he said that, I thought he must have an idea of what he wanted to do, so we wrote this song about being an outsider both in the industry and in your life and overcoming it and doing what you want to do. The thing about the album is it is split down the middle. The first half of the album is all upbeat. The second is the underbelly, the dark side. The Pharrell songs are so funky, but what Trespassing is also saying is it takes all this energy to put myself out there like that. I woke really hard to seem strong. I feel it's an example I have to set for gay kids in school or whatever, so they can say, I can be a popstar too. But to fight the adversity and discrimination that's so abundant in the States you have to put up your guard, and the album is kind of about that."

Are you comfortable being a role model - possibly even a martyr - because you were first to put your head above the parapet?
"I don't really have a choice. Some of it has been project onto me and I'm not upset about that. It's a pretty amazing gig to get, there's a lot of pressure and expectation. I don't like it when it overshadows the music. That's the hardest balance to strike, but I think this year, with this album and my life right now, balance is my key word. I'm striving to find it and maintain it. I'm closer to it than I was three years ago that's for sure."

Hence the two sides to the record?
"If everything has an opposite and equal reaction then that's this album. It deals with that give and take. A song like Trespassing is this big anthemic march stating be who you are, be proud, don't listen to the haters, be a rebel, do what you need to do. The flip-side is a song on the album that says when you do that there are consequences sometimes, there are anxieties that come from that and stressful moments, neurosis, pain and confusion. There are songs about that, low self-esteem, image... it's hard. This is not fucking easy!"

You're happy with that, you don't ever think, Leave me out of the politics I just want to sing?
"What's hard about being one of the few [openly gay US popstars] is that even with the gay community there's so much scrutiny from them. Some say you're not being gay enough, too gay, Why are you flamboyant? Why aren't you masculine? You don't represent us well. There are so many different types of gay dude, what's the difference? The gay community celebrates strong women, they don't necessarily celebrate strong men unless they're really straight acting. It's almost a study in extremes and that's what really good things about the album. It's saying no one is really one dimensional."

Not only do you work with established producers the like Pharrell or Dr Luke on this album, Sam Sparro has written a few songs too.
"He's got some new stuff coming too. We did a B-side around my last album called Voodoo which I really regretted didn't go on the album because it's strong. I looked at the songs I enjoyed performing from that record and the songs that went down well live, and I took a cue from that for this album, an electro, disco, funk feel is something I wanted to chase down. Pharrell opened the door for that and said, This what you should do and with Sam we created two more songs. Shady is one of them and we have Nile Rodgers playing on it. It's about wanting to get nasty and wanting to get into trouble."

Back up a second, Nile Rodgers?
"We were writing the song and we realised we needed something like Nile Rodgers guitar on the record. So Sam said, Why don't we just tweet Nile? So we tweeted him! We said Yo do you want to do something? And he went Fuck yeah! I brought him the track a few weeks later, he liked it, and he started putting a groove on it. My jaw was on the floor, it was so fucking cool! He took the song and gave it a whole other pocket."

What is your plan for the rest of the year?
"We're figuring it out as we go. I feel like this album will be more of a band thing live. Also I might be doing some more stuff with Queen, that could be great. I can't say but I think something is on the horizon."

What's it like to have an artist like that you've listened to all your life asking you to work with them?
"It's surreal! It's a bit intimidating but because they're so comfortable with it, it makes me comfortable with it. They're incredible. They're so paternal and warm."

  • What a great interview with a fantastic singer. Thank you! As someone who's been a huge fan of Adam's ever since he was on Idol it's brilliant to read an intelligent and thoughtful music interview with him in the UK. I really think he's one of, if not the, most gifted male singers of his generation and he deserves to be much better known in the UK than he is at the moment. Hopefully with great interviews like this and his second album speaking for itself this will change very soon!

  • Amazing. Not only is Adam an incredible singer but he's also an genuine humble guy. Adam was first brought to my attention in early 2009 and I've been hooked ever since. I hope the rest of the UK catches on to his remarkable talent, in this age of Atuotune etc it's a refreshing change to hear powerhouse vocals back again. He can sing the phonebook and make it sound awesome. Thanks for this very impressive interview.

  • Um, great article, but a few tpos - Brian may not ROger, Nile Rogers not Niall, Sam Sparro, not Sparrow. "Some of it has been project onto" - should read projected?
Anyway, despite my typo nit-picks, great interview, I'm so excited to hear the rest of the album, and I hope this makes it to the print copy of Q.

  • I echo "one of the best Adam interviews" I have read. I love hearing Adam's honesty of feeling and thought. Thank you for asking the right questions! It just makes me both angry and sad that Adam has these obstacles because of who he is from from both the straight and gay communities as well being ignored in the UK because he was on AI. This is so crazy as he is the most talented and exciting performer in today's music world!! Loved FYE and can't wait for "Trespassing." Everything I heard so far is amazing!!

  • Adam Lambert has a once in a generation talent. No one in music today can touch his vocal abilities. On top of that, he is one of the most humble, sweet, sincere and charismatic men you'll ever want to meet. Cannot wait for the new music he's coming out with, because I know it is going to ROCK!!! The possibility if him singing with Queen again just blows my mind!! If you have not heard his EMA performance with the legendary group, look it up on utube. You'll be blown away!!!!!!!

  • Adam doesn't realize what an incredible teacher he is. Just by being so honest about his life, he is showing us the realities of social attitudes and injustices. He struggles with acceptance on both sides of the gay/straight world. He has incredible courage. He doesn't back down. As for his talent, he is quite likely the best male vocalist performing today. Any genre, any style. Utter command of that voice. Add to this his engaging personality and out-of-this-world good looks, and I believe we have a well-deserved star on our hands.

it is all about the VOICE...................

  • Thank you so much for the fantastic interview. You mention at the beginning that you don't usually consider American Idol contestants worth taking notice of.
I have to admit that I had never taken any notice of any reality talent shows before Adam, I have been a Metal head for the last 30 years and those shows are well outside my comfort zone. But I saw Adam when he sang Ring of Fire on AI by accident one day and there was just something about him, not least his exceptional voice, which had me going back for more every week after despite my predudices.
He never resorted to the standard sob story and it was clear he wasn't bothered by anything Simon Cowell said, he just did his own thing every week and was exceptional every time. I couldn't vote being in the UK, but I was furious when he didn't win, and resolved to support him in whatever small ways I could because a talent like that deserves to succeed and I couldn't bear the thought of loosing him to obscurity again, so here I am 3 years later and still supporting him, a Metal head supporting an American Idol contestant. Who would have thought it? Certainly not me.

  • Thank you for the great interview. I totally agree with Kitty at 6:09 pm. Could not have said it better. Adam Lambert is a phenomenon, as a musician and as a human being. I want him to be heard and seen in every part of the world. We all need to experience great music and great people in our lives. I have to add I am really happy that Adam collaborated with Sam Sparro again. Voodoo is an incredible song. I'm sure the new collaboration with contribution from Nile Rogers (OMG!) is going to be mind blowing.

  • He has pushy fans, I'll give you that, but he isn't the first to stick his head over the parapet and isn't even very popular in the U.S. The UK is getting the dregs.

Posted by Shawn at 7:33 PM | 15/02/2012 | Report Abuse

  • Adam is a huge talent. Hopefully he will be embraced by musical industry and will get the level of mainstream popularity so much deserved.

Posted by Tatyana at 7:53 PM | 15/02/2012 | Report Abuse

  • Shawn, we all have our opinions, of course. But by no stretch of the imagination is Adam part of the "dregs." The voice alone is one in a million. As for popularity in the U.S., Adam's career is rising. The listening public does not always reward true talent, by any stretch of the imagination. The top sellers are proof of that. Adam never claimed to be the first gay performer to struggle for acceptance. Quite the contrary. He pays homage to many before him. His pure vocal talent is enough to make people sit up and take notice regardless of what else they think of him. Those who claim to "hate" him seem to have other agendas beyond vocal ability, looks, charisma and personality. When you "want" to hate someone, I guess you will. And his fans recognize a quality performer when they see one, hence their enthusiasm and yes, frustration sometimes. His live performances onstage are incredible. Hope you can give him a try with a fresh eye.

  • This is one of the best interviews w Adam Lambert I've ever read. Great questions & very informative. Adam is not only the most versatile & talented male singer in the world he's a wonderful, kind, generous human being. I wish more people would get to know him better and would fall in love with him like the millions of people that already have.

  • I'm really excited about this album. I hope the UK gives him the attention he deserves this time around. he thought he would be the most accepted there with the first album but he wound up being the most rejected there especially by radio. hope that changes. I love this interview! its amazing. thank you :)

  • Why so many duplicate comments? But. I want to put my two cents in and add that Adam is one industrious man who continues on the path he wishes in spite of hateful people out there. He is THE most talented entertainer, includes singer, actor, artist and yes, he can dance. You must see him on tour, you wouldn't believe the rapor he has with the audience...fans for life! He is beautiful in countenance and soul. An all round wonderful man, appreciative of all those who appreciate him. My muse!

  • Great interview. I can understand why Queen, Pharrell,Nile andSam Sparro would work with Adam. They are accomplished musicians and artists that recognize greatness. Many don't realize the excellent vocal training and years of hard work Adam has put in to maximize his astounding vocal instrument. He is a polished, natural performer and knows exactly what he's doing. As good as he sounds on a cd, you just aren't prepared for what he does with a live performance. When he came out on the stage singing Voodoo in his GlamNationTour, it felt like all of the air was sucked out of the room and what was left was charged with electricity. His vocal power, breath control and instinctive beautiful phrasing, hypnotizes and mesmerises. I am stunned everytime I hear him sing The Show Must Go On with Queen. He has my undivided attention and the world stops turning. He has done so much for the Gay community just by being his own wonderful self. He's so honest and he connects just by showing how much we all are really alike and have in common. He doesn't preach, he just is..I'm straight with 5 grown children and Adam turned the light back on in my soul. Life was and is good, but he excites and inspires goodness besides having iconic talent. This man is truly loved and respected by the most diverse crowd you could imagine. He truly has a brilliant spirit. This album will be sensational because Adam is...

  • It's nice to read an interview with him that foccus on the music and his importance to the music industry rather than on his personal life.
I love Adam, he's an amazing musician, and I'm really glad to know that he wrote more songs for this album, because his songwriting is great.
Sadly, he's not very succesfull in UK yet, but if this record is as good as he says it is, I'm sure he will be :)

  • Brilliant interview! I'm so looking forward to hearing his new album and I really hope it will bring him more recognition here in the UK because he really is an amazing singer. When I saw Adam on AI in 2009 I just thought 'Wow!' and it was lucky for me cos AI is not a programme I normally watch. I've liked him ever since! I really enjoyed reading this interview, thank you Q! and Adam of course!

  • Terrific article! My fervent wish is that the fantastic voice and talent that is Adam Lambert becomes a household name in the UK! No one can sing like Adam....no one. He is a once in a generation phenomenon and he is adored by many not only for his talent but for his character. Adam, we love you and wish you every success.

  • Adam Lambert is an amazing talent, his vocals beat any male pop artists out there but his charisma and energy on stage is something you don't want to miss! His new album has me so excited, great collabs, cannot wait!! Love his new single, Better Than I Know Myself and the video is wild!!I adore this guy!

  • Number 1 album in America on it's debut!! So well deserved. Nice interview - he is always so candid - gets him into trouble sometimes lol but you always know where he stands on any issue. @ shawn. LMAO Oh dear, there's one in every crowd. If you don't know anything about Adam it's a lot smarter not to say anything at all. Your comments that he's "not popular in the US" (LMAO) and calling him "dregs" indicate a profound ignorance about him on your part. Easily fixed. Check out one of the 100s of fansites for him worldwide for info.
