Guest Column - Where it's @? Reverend & The Makers on why they named their album after Twitter

Having just supported Noel Gallagher for the first stage of his UK arena dates, Reverend & The Makers are gearing up to release a new album on 18 June, which they've named after their Twitter handle @reverend_makers - apparently it's the first record to take it's name from the mirco-blogging site. So is this the 21st century equivalent of having a self-titled album, a tribute to social media or the start of a gimmick we're all going to get sick of? Never one to hide in the shadows, Jon McClure explains where his head's @.
So why in gods name did we call our album @reverend_makers? Well firstly we'd exhausted the alternatives. We had a song called Out The Shadows and we debated calling it that, but quickly backtracked when the the parity with Partridge's Bouncing Back was made clear.
Another contender was Pure Bangers. After all, the tunes are mostly of the banger variety , however this resembles more an Ayia Napa garage mixtape from 2002. So we were left with the safe option of an eponymous third album, but that's a bit like going to Spain and eating chips and egg every day isn't it?
You see the songs are about little things I see happening right now where I live in Sheffield. Not in some sepia coloured retro wank off world of my sixties imagination but right now. There's a song called Shine The Light about buying a lottery ticket and another's about me telling a girl I'd rather see her as she really and not posing in her Facebook profile pic. There's a song about me having some lads who are right noisy living next door and me having a rave to return the compliment. Songs about real life situations that amuse me right about now basically... The kind of subject matter us and contemporaries used to write until we all started taking ourselves a bit too seriously.
And in the days when everyone's bangin the Facebook chat , and live tweeting their every bowel movement, it seemed like nothing sums up 2012, right now like the @ symbol.
I like the fact it's defiantly modern and digital which is in keeping with the electronic overtones of the album itself. What's more is I think I'm alright on Twitter. I'm not ashamed to say I wish more people followed me and found out about the things I do from my mouth or fingertips and not through any other medium. I like the interaction with fans. All my favourite artists have that connection.
So there you have it!
Of course the cynical amongst you might conclude this was dreamt up in a marketing meeting by a Nathan Barley-type and forced upon me, alas the truth is far removed but I shall not endeavour to change your mind. I'm happy on the futurama bus and I'm keeping my @@@@s, alright?
