Arnold Schwarzenegger, The Who, Jimi Hendrix & Forest Gate: How Plan B escaped his fate - Q311 preview

Plan B has some interesting role models to help inspire him thanks to his home town's, Forrest Gate, unlikely connections.
Featuring on the cover of our brand new issue Q310 the rapper/singer - real name Ben Drew - explained that the east London's area's folklore helped him to stay focused on music when growing up.
Remarkably Arnold Scwarzenegger trained at Wag Bennett's Gym in Forrest Gate before winning the Mr Universe body building competition, while The Who opened the area's The Upper Cut Club which boasted The Small Faces as a house band and was the place where Jimi Hendrix wrote Purple Haze.
And the unlikely connections were not lost on a young Drew.
"Growing up hearing these stories, I thought, Fuck if they lived here and made something of their lives, then I can," he explains. "It was a perfect balance: there was a crime, but there was also musical history, good schools, [parkland] Wanted Flats, y'know, nature.
"And jungle music came from there and I fucking loved it. It was inspirational. Especial when, at the time, the Spice Girls was just everywhere and I thought, If these jokers can do it, then I can do it... but then I was lucky. I had a very obvious talent."
Get Q311 now for the full interview with Drew, including his views on last year's riots, his new film and album Ill Manors, his role in the movie version of The Sweeney, toughening-up and more.
